It is with great sadness that we share that Dr. Carol Eckert, a volunteer clinician with Maine Migrant Health Program, died on October 13, 2016 due to injuries from a bicycling accident. Carol was a volunteer physician with MMHP, working as part of our team throughout the state for the past four years. She was seeing patients alongside our team during this most recent blueberry and apple harvest.
In addition to her work with our program, she devoted much of her professional career to primary care and public health in the state of Maine.
Carol was a 1979 graduate of the Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency in Augusta, Maine. She worked for over thirty years for HealthReach Community Health in various federally qualified health centers across the state. The majority of her career she provided full spectrum primary care at Sheepscot Valley Health Center in Coopers Mills, Maine. After retiring from Sheepscot Valley, Carol continued to work for HealthReach, traveling to provide clinical coverage at all of their sites as needed throughout Maine. She also served as the Medical Director of the Maine Community Accountable Care Organization, the ACO to which HealthReach and seven other FQHCs belong.
Outside of her daily practice, Carol served on the Maine Pesticide Control Board, the Public Health Committee of the Maine Medical Association, and was a member of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, to name only a few activities.
We are so grateful for the time we were able to spend working alongside Carol and her commitment to our patients. We will truly miss her.
